What is Family Constellations?
At its core, Family Constellation is about giving a voice to the things we don’t always say—the unspoken dynamics that live between us and the people we’re connected to, even generations back.
During a session, you might find yourself asking others to stand in as representations of your family members. These individuals, often strangers, take on roles, not through words but through the emotions, sensations, and instincts they feel while standing in these positions. It’s a deeply intuitive process where the participants reflect the dynamics of your family system, giving you a new perspective on those relationships.
Maybe you’ve always felt distant from a parent or carried a sense of guilt that’s hard to explain. As the constellation unfolds, the positions and feelings of the representatives may help bring to light where that sense of distance or guilt really comes from. It might not even be your own burden—it could be something passed down from a grandparent or an ancestor you never met, a part of the family’s story that remains unresolved.
In a 1-1 family constellation, we use dolls to represent family members. In a group workshop, other people in your session step into this role.
This process can have a profound effect on your understanding of yourself and your family. It’s like getting a clear look at the web of connections that have been influencing you without your awareness. By shifting the way you see these connections, you can start to heal. Relationships might not change overnight, but your relationship to them does. You begin to see with more compassion, more understanding, and sometimes a surprising sense of relief. It’s not about fixing others or erasing the past, but about finding a new way of being with it.
What makes Family Constellations so powerful is that it allows us to honor the stories of the past while creating space for new stories in the present.
It’s a deeply human experience, one that asks us to look not just at the people in our lives but at the relationships that have shaped us, both visible and invisible. And in doing so, it offers the possibility of peace—within ourselves and with those we love.
